Lux Salsa Program: From Foundations to Mastery

At Studio Lux, Salsa is more than just a class you take — it’s a journey we guide you through step by step. From your very first basics to confidently holding your own on any dance floor, our program is designed to grow with you.
Why We Teach On1 and On2

At Lux, we believe every dancer benefits from understanding both major Salsa timings — On1 (L.A. Style) and On2 (New York Style). This dual-timing gives you the freedom to dance anywhere in the world, whether you’re in a local social or at an international festival, and helps you grow into a well-rounded, musical dancer.

Salsa On1 (Beginner).
We start new dancers with Salsa On1 to build coordination, rhythm, and partner connection on the beginner-friendly “core beats.” This style helps you pick up the fundamentals quickly and gives you a solid foundation in rhythm, partnering, and movement. Most dancers train at this level for about 3–6 months before they’re ready for the next step.

Salsa On2 (Intermediate & Beyond).
Once you’ve built your foundation On1, we transition you into Salsa On2 — the timing that opens up the music in a whole new way. On2 helps you feel rhythm and phrasing more deeply, refine your technique, and unlock the styling and musicality that define today’s top social dancers. On2 isn’t just for “advanced” dancers. It’s the natural next step for anyone ready to move past the basics and grow. It's the timing you’ll find at all major socials and festivals, the language of serious dancers around the world. Training On2 at Lux means you’re not only sharpening your skills in Austin, but preparing yourself to dance confidently anywhere.

How to Transition to Salsa On2
When you’re ready to move from On1 to On2, we support you with:
  • Quarterly Transition Intensives – deep dives into timing, musicality, and drills that give you the strongest start On2.
  • Monthly On2 On-Ramp (coming soon) – a 30-minute add-on before class, designed to ease into On2 timing and concepts
  • Private Lessons or Mini-Groups – personalized support if you want to accelerate your transition or catch up between intensives.
  • Instructor Guidance – your teachers help you know when you’re ready so you never feel like you’re making the leap alone.

Level Guide
Our program is structured so you can start at the right level and progress at your own pace. Advancement is based on mastery, not time, and these ranges are general benchmarks, not rules. Progress depends on how often you train, practice, and dance socially.
💡 Not sure if you’re ready to level up? Use our Self-Assessment Checklist (available in class) or chat with your instructor. We’re always happy to help you find the best fit.

  • Beginner (0-6 months or 0-30 hours of Salsa experience)
Our Beginner level builds your foundation from the ground up: timing, rhythm, and partner connection. You’ll learn the full family of basics, turns, and cross-body lead variations while starting to explore direction changes and hand variations. Classes focus on clear technique, confident movement, and dancing comfortably with any partner. By the end, you’ll feel fluent in the essentials and ready to start layering complexity.

  • Intermediate (6-24 months or 30-100 hours of Salsa experience)
At the Intermediate level, you’ll expand your vocabulary and refine control. Expect more intricate hand transitions, copas, checks, back-spot turn variations, 360s, and simple double turns, plus styling and musical phrasing. This level bridges solid mechanics with personal style, developing precision, timing, and body awareness so your dancing feels natural, musical, and expressive. Most dancers stay in Intermediate for one to two years.
💡 New to Salsa On2? Take a look at the How to Transition to Salsa On2 section above before joining an Intermediate class — it’ll help you get the most out of your training.

  • Advanced (24+ months or 100+ hours of Salsa On2 experience)
Advanced is where strong technique meets artistry and playfulness. You’ll explore rapid direction changes, unexpected turns, expert-level hand tricks, and styling like a pro. Training focuses on nuance — balance, weight transfer, and high-level partner communication — to help you dance with the confidence and clarity of a pro.
